Buying or building a house seems very costly and often termed as a ‘dream’ for many. Condos, on the other hand, tend to be cheaper. However, they both have their perks and drawbacks. It has always been up for debate as to which one is a better option. While purchasing or renting a property, you are in a dilemma between the two. Today, in this article, we will look at all the aspects of this age-old debate in a new light one by one.
Let’s start by understanding what each one of them is
A house is an individual structure. It is separated from any other residential building, unlike condos where the walls are connected with each other, and the entire structure is one. Usually, a house only has room for one family or joint family, and the entire building is owned by a single person or members of the same family. House usually has its own garage, backyard, and other rooms, and it is usually larger than apartments and other structures.
A condo is an apartment house, part of a bigger building. There are other condos in the same building where other families also reside. Usually, things like a pool, yards, and such are shared by the people. It is more cost-efficient than a house. However, you don’t have a personal rooftop and other belonging. There is often a home association established by the people of the apartment to overlook the maintenance and other amenities that are commonly used by the residents of the condos.
The Difference Between The Two
Considering the cost of the two, condos are generally less expensive than houses. Therefore, condos are preferred by first-time house buyers. However, in the case of a condo, you will have to pay a monthly maintenance charge to the HOA (Home Owners Association) for regular maintenance of the common facilities. In a house, on the other hand, you will have to take care of the maintenance of all the interior as well as the exterior areas and facilities, by yourself.
Also, the insurance for a house is much more expensive than a condo.
Condos provide space for socializing and getting to know people in your building. Because of community living, it is that much less of a responsibility to maintain the exterior of the house. However, condos may not allow extreme privacy, and there will always be a slight chance of disturbance by unwanted noises or unwanted people.
Living in a house also allows you to live independently and live by your own rules. In a condo, on the other hand, you will have to follow the rules of the HOA. You might not be allowed to play music for later hours in the day and not be allowed to use the common areas whenever you want.
For a single, independent person, a condo is a better option than a house. It relieves you of maintenance responsibility and gives you space to know more people and interact with them. Moreover, it is more affordable.
For a family, a house is a better option since it allows privacy and provides uninterrupted access. You can modify or renovate it however you like. While it may be a little more expensive, it is great to offer personal space to you and your family, apart from the neighbors, a quieter place.
